L.A. Permaculture Action Day at GrowGood
October 20, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Permaculture Action Day
Sunday, October 20th, 2019 10am – 5pm
A day of hands-on projects to grow food, hope, and community with the Bell Shelter.
Workshops, Music, Food, and Building Relationships.
GrowGood has been working in partnership with The Salvation Army since 2011 to transform and maintain a 1.5-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Bell Homeless Shelter into an urban farm. The Bell Shelter is one of the largest houseless shelters west of the Mississippi, operating a comprehensive program that offers transitional care for up to 500 houseless people at a time including women and veterans.
GrowGood’s no-till, regenerative urban farm provides the Shelter’s kitchen with substantial quantities of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables as well as therapeutic activities and employment opportunities for residents.
This is a free, family-friendly day of action to build infrastructure and plant trees and other edible/beneficial species at GrowGood! Please feel free to bring tools, work gloves, and potluck items to share, but do not feel obligated! Bring a water bottle, and even reusable dishware if you’re able.

WORKSHOPS
Soil Health with Kiss The Ground
Join Kiss the Ground for an interactive soil demonstration that will look at the interaction between agriculture, soil health, and water runoff. Starting with a meditation on a seed we’ll move through comparing degraded and healthy soils and end with an orientation to the basics of our Soil Advocacy classes.
Seed Bombs with Mama Sunshine
Learn how to use your inner rebel for good. By planting wild flower seed bombs you can beautify eye sores in the neighborhood, give food to pollinators and encourage positive change in your communities. Bee a honey, plant a garden.
Soil Regeneration w/ Kiss The Ground
Yael of Kiss The Ground brings her expertise to this workshop on regenerating degraded soils into healthy, living soil that supports the ecological health and human communities.
Vote With Your Dollar: A dialogue between Conscious Capitalism and the Solidarity Economy
w/ Ernesto Borges & Ryan Rising
Join Ernesto Borges of the tri and Ryan Rising of Permaculture Action Network for an exploration of the frameworks of Conscious Capitalism and the Solidarity Economy. By bringing these two strategies in conversation with one another we seek to collectively learn practical tools for transitioning away from the extractive economy and toward just and regenerative relationships with one another and our ecosystem.
MUSIC
DJ Sets by Ernaste (EPHCTO) and Sky Society
Live performances by Whitney Lyman, Cappy Franti (son of Michael Franti), Aste Mari, and Nación Ekeko
Month of Events
This Fall 2019 Guayakí Yerba Mate heads to Los Angeles for the month of October. Their time will be spent producing music events, community gatherings, interactive art experiences, and action days – all focused on social and environmental work supporting the regenerative movement.
Together we will mobilize people from the Come To Life: Wisdome.LA event with musicians Tuxedo and Nacion Ekeko on Saturday, October 19th, to the Permaculture Action Day at GrowGood the day following the concert The Main Squeeze and Rising Appalachia will similarly sound the call to action at their shows in LA on Oct 12th and 15th.
*Directions to the farm:
Go south on the 5, exit 129 (Atlantic/Eastern). Turn left on Eastern Blvd. Then turn right onto Mansfield (you’ll pass Washington and Bandini and Rickenbacker avenues).
On Mansfield, pass straight through two stop signs and continue west. For reference, at the second stop sign, there is a new apartment complex on the left. The farm is just west of that also on the left. There is a fenced parking area and you can park there or anywhere on the street. If you pass a cluster of homes on the left, you have gone too far.
*The Farm is across the street from the Mansfield entrance to the Bell Shelter.
