Another great Action Day, this time in Sebastopol, California. Taproot Farm and the Permaculture Skills Center hosted some good old fashion fun and hard work.
The day started with vinyasa flow yoga and moved into an open room discussion on social permaculture and how to apply these ecological principles to our communities and even to our human relationships. We plastered a cob bench with earthen materials and helped the farm sheet mulch to prepare for planting.
PERMACULTURE FUN FACT
Sheet mulching is a method of preparing soil by layering cardboard, compost, topsoil, and mulch. This method results in a nutrient rich soil without tilling, a process that often destroys communities of microorganisms and fungi living in the soil.
No-till farming increases the retention of organic matter and nutrients in the soil, increases water infiltration, and reduces soil erosion.
The Permaculture Skill Center is 2 acres of rotational farm in the center of Sebastopol. It is also home to llamas, chickens, and the LARGEST squash any of us has ever seen. The Taproot Farm and Permaculture Skills Center stand as a model for permaculture action and a great resource to get involved now.
If you find yourself in Sebastopol, we strongly recommend checking this place out. It’s totally free to take a tour.
